Famous clichés about French people and French way of life

Have you ever wonder what clichés foreigners might have about your country or cultural behaviour? We did a little brainstorming of what we hear the most about French people and the French culture in general… We tried to give you the truth about it! 😉

Cliché #1: French people are rude or grumpy

This is one of the most common and famous stereotypes about the French. It’s that they are rude, grumpy and often impolite.

TRUE OR NOT? Not all regions of France have the same general culture or attitude towards other people and even fellow French people will probably tell you that Parisians are rude. It depends on who you meet… Don’t make it a generality, we can be really nice and smiling (sorry for the many strikes you’ve seen these days 😥  ).

Cliché #2 French people are great lovers…

Ah l’amour! The French have a reputation for being romantic and seductive. They are the kings of Romance, courting, French kissing, going for “dîner en tête à tête” like romantics rendez-vous.

Couples wouldn’t go to any kind of place for a romantic dinner, they always try to go to nice restaurants and men especially enjoy saying romantic compliments to the girl they are flirting with.

In surveys of the most romantic languages, French is often among the top results.

So is that TRUE OR NOT? Well, we can say that, but we are surely not the only ones in the World! But anyway, let’s maintain the myth! (Check the French love songs of Edith Piaf and Jacques Brel out in our playlist in Newsletter #1 meltingpotesbdx.com/2018/11/17/the-melting-tips-newsletter-1/)

Cliché #3 We eat only snails, frog legs and camembert cheese

According to tradition, french people are known as strong consumers of unique products such as snails, frog legs and camembert cheese.

NOT SO TRUE! We do not eat frog legs that often, actually it is VERY occasional. Indeed we can eat snails but that pretty occasional too (if you ever have to try it, try the famous Cargolade from South West of France). Finally, yes French people usually love Camembert cheese!

Cliché #4 We wear blue stripped T-shirts, red scarfs and berets

TRUE? NOT AT ALL! You’ll never (or almost never) see a French person dressed like that! It is pur cliché! However wine and baguette are definitely not a cliché…

Cliché #5 All French people are so good at cooking sophisticated, refined stuff

French people do like good food, but all of them doesn’t cook well! Some barely know how to cook pastas!!!

Cliché #6 French people often go on strike

TRUE to be on strike is very common here in France because of our History and culture. The right to go on strike is very important for French people and our vision of democracy, it was probably inherited from the French Revolution in 1789. It is often admired in other countries but although it is a chance to have the right to express our opinion, sometimes French strike too much and are just comfortable with complaining all the time. It can be either a good or a bad thing…
